The Saints Go Marching In!
In a few short years St Julians High School Old Boys have gone from having no Mini or Junior teams to now running four age grade sides from U7 to U11. FoNR were very encouraged by the efforts made at St.Julians and sponsored the U10 side last season. It is great to know that there are so many young players coming through the ranks in Newport. The Trust Community Section were glad to be able to invite the Saints to Rodney Parade on the opening British irish Cup encounter this season to not only witness the rugby on display, but also to take part in our new coaching scheme. With Newports star player Mike Poole taking charge, the youngsters were put through an intense workout before performing the Guard of Honour duty. Mike who is currently on the injured list was helped out by several of Newport's walking wounded, Jamie Tibbs and Dan Watchurst to name but two. The session started early and there were fitness and skills routines followed by some touch rugby. The Trust would like to thank the boys who ran the session, especially Mike Poole who took charge. Perhaps Pooley is looking at a coaching role in the future? We would of course like to see all the boys back fit and playing soon. The St.Julians teams then went to line up for the Leinster and Newport teams as they ran out before running across the pitch to take their seats for kick off. They were a noisy and supportive bunch and did their club proud. If you have a child between 7 and 11 who would like to take up rugby, the Trust can put you in touch with St.Julians or any of the other junior teams in Newport and the surrounding area.
