FoNR Support Undy Rugby Academy Undy Rugby Academy has just reached the end of its second season and the FoNR Community Section were very interested to show some support. The Academy was launched by enthusiastic volunteers, originally for children from Undy Primary School. They have now encompassed Magor School and are hoping to link up with Magor Veterans to form a club side. Many Newport Supporters will remember when Magor had a vibrant club and this could just herald a return to those happy days. Undy had attended Rodney Parade to form Guards of Honour and Mascot duties for Newport RFC and the Dragons, but the Trust wanted to help out further. After some discussion it was agreed that a trophy be awarded for an Ultimate Support Player and that this would become a regular award at seasons end. The requirements for a winner of this award were for a player who has shown great ability at reading the game as well as performing well. He would be the player always showing up in support at breakdowns and set piece and always being present in both attack and defence. He would also be the player giving encouragement and praise to others as well as being a good friend to everyone on and off the park. There were eleven nominees for this award but the eventual winner was eleven year old Evan Whitehouse who received his award from Nick Jackson representing FoNR and Ben Castle and Nigel Hall from the Newport Gwent Dragons. Evan plays at scrum half for the academy as well as for Caldicot RFC and has appeared for the Newport and District side. As well as displaying the attributes described above, Evan has also shown some heroic tendancies when his friend was knocked unconcious during a cycling accident. Evan stayed with him and ensured that he was breathing correctly and eventually helped him to safety in a post confusional state. The injured lad was somewhat bigger than Evan so it was no easy feat. Evan is thoroughly deserving winner of our award. Nick Jackson. FoNR Community Rep' |
